Abigail Rice
Abigail was born and raised in Philadelphia, and from a young age, she had a passion for styling
hair. When she was just eight years old, her mother gifted her a Barbie head for Christmas, and Abigail would style it whenever she had the chance. There was something incredibly fulfilling about styling hair: “It felt good to her, therapeutic!”
In Philadelphia, it was common for children to wear their hair in braids or weaves starting at the age of six. When Abigail turned ten, her mom continued to style her hair with barrettes and ballies, while other kids at school wore weaves, braids, or had relaxed hair. Her mother tried to keep her looking like a little girl for as long as possible, but this made Abigail feel like an outcast, which was difficult for her at that age, especially since kids can be cruel. One day, Abigail woke up with a brilliant idea. She decided to get to school early and change her hairstyle in the girls’ restroom. And after school, she would revert to the style her mother had given her, and her mom never noticed the difference. By mimicking her mother’s hairstyles, Abigail discovered her own skills.
At the age of twelve, Abigail’s mother allowed her to take control of her hair, and that’s when she truly embraced it. She experimented with a different style every week, whether it was coloring, cutting, weaving, or braiding—she tried it all. Looking back at her childhood photos, she’s amazed at the variety of hairstyles she created for herself and others.
During this time, all the kids in her neighborhood admired her hairstyles. Abigail began styling the hair of girls in the neighborhood and cutting boys’ hair every weekend for free. She did it without charging them because she didn’t realize she could. Even if she had known, she probably wouldn’t have wanted any money; she found fulfillment in the joy of styling others’ hair. “It felt like fulfillment; it felt like purpose,” she said.
